The Known World

For a dose of historical fiction, grab The Known World, first novel from captivating author, Edward P. Jones. Preparing for a long airplane ride, I dashed into a nearby bookstore and grazed the aisles in search of a title that caught my eye. Drawn to the Pulitzer Prize sticker and cover photo hinting of an old Southern tale, my curiosity was piqued and I headed to checkout.

A spinning tale of the destructive power and transcending strength of individuals victimized as well as abounding due to enslavement.  Characters are numerous, their tales are provocatively interwoven and time effortlessly lulls between past, present and future. Never a dull moment as thought provoking historical truths are explored, such as freed slaves deciding to own slaves.  With a refreshing flair, Jones creates characters rich in experience, enslaved blacks, free blacks, whites, and Native Americans are used to reflect the multidimensional moral dilemma of enslavement.

An intriguing book written by a gifted author. Must read.

…But, you do not have to take my word for it….

“Jones has written a book of tremendous moral intricacy.” – The New Yorker

“Brilliant… So utterly original that it makes most everything previously written about slavery seem outdated and pedestrian. It belongs on a shelf with other classics of slavery, like Toni Morrison’s Beloved and William Syron’s The Confessions of Nat Turner.” – Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“ A masterpiece that deserves a place in the American literary canon.” – Time
