Isaac Murphy Image Awards: Kentucky Derby 2012 at it’s finest

Louisville, Kentucky takes on a different vibe during the Kentucky Derby festivities. Fancy shindigs, celebrities, fabulous food and drinks — it’s quite the party! A must see and do experience, if you ask me. And the 2012 Derby season, like most others, didn’t disappoint. I had the awesome opportunity of attending the Isaac Murphy Image Awards held at the beautiful Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. An amazing night!

Aside from the fancy dresses, amazing music and great conversations — I bumped into the quite dapperly dressed Danny Glover, the evening’s lifetime achievement award recipient. And what’s even better, he was kind enough to pose for a photo. Glover’s acceptance speech was quite thought-provoking. He poignantly discussed where African Americans have been, what we’ve overcome, and where we’re going — interweaving it with notes of the indelible mark made by Isaac Murphy, a black jockey and the first to win THREE Kentucky Derby’s. Glover kept it light with a joke here and there, which is always nice.

I’m honored to have been a part of the event, courtesy of an fabulous friend of mine (pictured with Mr. Glover), and plan to make it a part of my Kentucky Derby tradition going forward.
