PR Series: Tips of the Trade – Read, Read, Read

If you work in public relations and aren’t constantly reading, there’s something wrong with your scenario. Of course there’s client work, meetings, networking, administrative duties and things of that nature. You do have to run a business. However, reading and public relations go together like white on rice. Like two peas in a pod. Like the perfect shoes to go along with a fabulous outfit. Get it?

So now that you know that you need to read, you also need to know what to read. Don’t fret! We’re not leaving you hanging. Figuring it out is as simple as making a list of your clients and target clients, and then labeling them by industry. This will help you determine what industry publications you need to be reading. Once you make this list you can then delve deeper into the magazines, trades, journals, blogs, books, etc. you need read. And we can’t stress the word NEED enough. It’s an absolutely necessity that you stay on top of what’s going on in your client industries, and also know exactly how to target the publications and blogs you want to see your clients featured in. There’s something about knowing a writer’s tendencies that makes them more likely to respond to your pitches. Just saying.

Next, you should focus on PR industry leaders. Most of the time, they know what they’re talking about and can provide you with a leg up on some of the better industry practices out there. They’ve seen these practices in action, and they share them. Why not read what this group has to say and then figure out a way to implement their suggestions into your own workflow. Makes sense, right?

Lastly, you need to be on top of relevant current events in your local, nationally, globally,  as well as your clients’ locations. You can’t possibly know everything, but it sure doesn’t hurt to try! Nothing beats a local tie in, and sometimes you can build one out of the most unexpected happenings. A little creativity can go a very long way.
